Non-Geek Computer Components Definition

How about a non-geek definition for computer components?  Generally speaking, I think I can make that pretty simple.  Instead of being thrown by computer components, just think of it as computer PARTS.  Typically speaking, computer components are the actual physical parts that you can touch and feel and see that make the computer do its magic.

Here's a sampling of what most people think of (geeks included) when they think of computer components:

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit)
  • Cases and Towers
  • Screens
  • Circuit Board
  • Fans
  • Interface Cards
  • Motherboards
  • Motherboard Parts and Accessories (like cables)
  • Modems
  • Sound Cards
  • Power Supplies
  • PCMCIA Cards

These are the sorts of things most people are talking about when they use computer components.  Got it?

Is it better to buy computer components new, or is it okay to get used or refurbished ones?

Okay, let me just shoot straight with you.  If your budget allows and money is not really an object, then by all means buy new computer components.  And get those computer components from a reputable company either online or in a local store -- one you have some familiarity with.  It's wise to clearly understand their warranty and return policy, too.  Due to some abuses, there has been some volatility to various store's return/exchange policies.  I just think it's best if you know what you're limitations are, especially regarding computer components, BEFORE you pay rather than be surprised after the fact when you're legitimately trying to solve a problem.

But let's say you're on a budget or you want to just play around and do-it-yourself.  You can find really good deals and excellent computer components that are used and/or refurbished.  Sometimes that's your only choice, too.  So don't freak out if all you can find is a refurbished or rebuilt computer component.  I've had people tell me that they actually prefer these to new because of experiences where they've lasted longer.  Some people also believe (rightly or wrongly, who really knows?) that parts are more cheaply made today as opposed to a few years ago due to so much cost-cutting and the sour economy.

Get Computer Components from Reputable Place

I still highly recommend that even though you're likely getting a really good deal purchasing computer components used, you should buy from a reputable establishment or individual.  Plus, doing so can often get you some no cost advise from someone in the know where you can learn  more about what it is you're trying to achieve by purchasing that particular computer component.  But again, do your own research (pretty easy nowadays with all the resources available on the Internet) before you set out to make your purchase.  That way you're more likely to stay on track with what your original intent for obtaining those computer components was in the first place.
