Installing Roof Vent Fans
The recent complications wrought by climate change have resulted in extended periods of warmer weather in most countries. Its impact may also be seen in the changing trends in engineering and architecture, where more people want their houses designed with built-in cooling features. The steps involved in the installation of these vent fans are basically very easy provided you have the complete tools to undertake the procedure, such as a pry bar which is used in removing shingles, claw hammer, reciprocating saw, utility knife, caulk gun and a drill/driver. Roofing nails and decking screws will also come in handy.
The installation of a vent fan may be done even without the help of a pro, as long as you are careful in following the do-it-yourself procedures that come along with it. First, get into the attic and mark the spot where the fan will be installed, which is usually between two rafters. This is going to take a bit longer so you have to be patient. Second, drive a nail through the spot where the fan will be placed. This is to give you a precise guide on where to locate that spot once you are over the roof. Third, divide the vent fan's diameter in two. With a piece of string half longer than that number, tie one end to the nail and the other to a piece of chalk. Draw a circle over the roof to get the size hole and you will need to clear free of shingle to cut your hole.
Next, carefully cut around your chalk outline using a utility knife. Then remove the shingles and nails from that area you just cut. Use your string and chalk again to mark the hole onto the wood of the roof once it is fully exposed. Then use the reciprocating saw to cut the hole in your roof. Pull out the shingles in the area around the hole to give way for the flashing on the roof vent fan. Pour ample amount of roofing sealant to prevent leakage around the hole where the new vent fan is located. With decking screws, secure the fan in place over the opening and screw the flashing to the roof. Then put ample amount of roof sealant around the flashing of the fan to seal the area around it. Finally, replace the shingles around the fan. Fasten the shingles as tightly as possible and put in more sealant around the diameter of the new fan. This is done to prevent the wood around the roof vent fan to rot.
The benefits of roof vent fans cannot be overemphasized as the weather gets warmer not only during summer time but all throughout the year. Not only are these accessories practical because of their low cost and because they help pull down the power bills but they also provide you comfort and convenience beyond your expectations. The installation of vent fans is a wise investment that will pay for itself as the years go by.

Can you take a ceiling fan with an 48" lead and cut it down?
I was given 6 ceiling fans that are really nice, but they are for rooms with high ceilings. They have 48" lead wires and metal rod. I was wondering if there is any way to cut the rod down so the ceiling fan could be used as a normal sized one.

I'm assuming you really mean a solid rod with wires exposed and not a tube with wires running through.
Either way you should unscrew the rod/tube from the fitting cut to length and re thread for replacement.
If you have no threading tools any decent local engineers workshop will do it or check for local model engineers club
Alternatively cut the top end drill a hole across the diameter and fit heavy duty snap (key) ring to hang the fitting.
It still works if the top end fits through a cup type ceiling fixing.
