A History of Fans With Ideas for Today
Fans actually have a long history that many probably are unaware of. Fans have been used as status symbols, decorative pieces, and cooling devices. In the past fans were made from palm leaves and feathers, with bases of wood, paper, and even chicken skin! Handheld fans were used as communicating tools; certain waves of a fan indicated specific emotions or messages in social circles. As status symbols, fans displayed costly materials and precious materials, displaying an individual's wealth. Gold, mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, and ivory were used in some fan designs, creating pieces of art in the process. Museums around the world today are dedicated to displaying some of these historic fans and this unique form of art, and handheld fans are still popular in the contemporary world of fashion.
With the discovery of electricity the fan became an automatic motor-powered cooling device, without the tiring of human arms. Large spaces can now be cooled in a very short amount of time. The first electric fan was invented in the late 1800's by Philip Diehl, who used a sewing machine's motor for an electric ceiling fan. It was known as the Diehl Electric Fan. He added his own light kit later on and continued to work on advancements.

Where to buy a fan motor and capaciter for A/C condenser on a Saturday?
My a/c was humming and not running. I believe that the capaciter is not working properly and the bearings on the fan motor may be leaking also. I'd like to replace them both, but can't find anyone who will just sell me one on a saturday. I'm not an hvac technician and can't order through a supplier like Johnstone. Can anyone help?
The capacitor you might be able to get an appliance center. Its a long shot. The Fan motor if bad should ONLY be replace with and OEM motor. Youll thank me later.
Humming sounds like a bad capacitor. If it swollen or mushroom at the top or bottom. Bingo shes bad. I would start with that. Your going to need to get the MFD rating off it and the Volts.
If after replacement and the Compressor does not kick on, you need to check the three wire that go into the compressor terminal housing. IT will either slide up or have a metal clip that will need to be removed. MAKE SURE YOU PULL THE DISCONNECT WHILE DOING ANY OF THIS !!!!
You need to inspect all the terminal wires at there respective connection points. Your unit may have a compressor terminal plug. Inspect the plug. If it melted you need to replace it. If you cant locate one you need a terminal repair kit. All of these parts can be ordered online. By the way the capacitor is the silver thing, and is in the service acess panel where the power wire comes into unitl. You need a 5/16 nut drover or socket will work. And a 1/4 inch to get the retaining screw off the capacitor clamp. If your total lost by pretty handy, go to all places you tube and type in capacitor replacement. Its important to note that if you have 2 capacitors in the unit you need to look at the larger one. It will be marked on the top of it C- This is Common NOT the compressor Fan- Self exp. Herm- This is the compressor So dont go pulling off all the wires. Just get MFD and Volts. Then when you get the new one it will marked just like the old one. Remove on wire at a time. to the corresponding terminal. ALSO CAPACITORS store high levels of volts. So dont go touch the wires with you hand to remove. Use an insulated tool. Its a 15 min job, wost case for you 1 hr.
Or worst case break down and call the HVAC man. Your probably looking at 150-175 service call with parts. If the fan motor is toast, bend over. They will stick it to you.
