I Aam Buying A New Hard Drive Will My Operating System Still Be There?

I currently have a 40GB Fujitsu 2.5" IDE PA-TA Hard Drive currently in my IBM Think-Pad T42 Laptop. I have ordered a new Samsung HM160HC 160GB 2.5" Hard Drive IDE 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM from eBuyer (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155940).

Once I insert the new Hard Drive into my laptop will my OS (Windows Vista Home Premium) still be there and will I be able to boot up my system properly?

If this is the case, then how do I go about booting up my laptop or will I have to reinstall my OS?

Sadly it will be gone. It will be on the old HD. You have to reinstall.

There is a solution, but you might not like it.

You have to "clone" the old HD to the new one.

Easiest way to do that is to use a USB to 2.5 inch IDE adapter.

Power down, plug in the new HD to the adapter and prepare it by partitioning it with a 40 Gig primary partition and at least one other extended partition of at least 40 Gigs. The rest can be formatted or not as you wish. Set the primary partition to active. Power down.

Make an image of the existing drive C: using Hiren's Cd as a boot CD. (assumes your laptop has a CD drive). Select clone in the menu and pick a cloning software like Drive Image. Run that and make an image of drive C: to the extended partition of the new HD.

You could now swap the drives, but its quicker to do it direct while it is all there.

With the same Drive Image software, restore the image to the primary partition of the new disk.

Assuming all goes well it should just do it. Now you can swap the drives.

Start up. A prayer may help if appropriate.

If it wont start, then maybe the primary wasn't set to active. Fix that by booting with with Hiren's again using any of the partitioning software. I like Partition Magic. Try again.

If that fails, and assuming we are talking XP, then boot on any XP install disk and go to the repair console (R). Try the fixmbr C: and fixboot C: commands. Use after each. Type Exit You are done.

Restart. Another prayer.

That should work.

If not, you have a trip to the local laptop repair centre coming up. But it should be fine. Print this out so they will know what you have done, or tried to do.

Keep the image on drive D:. You might need it for a restore one day. you can always remove the drive letter and Windows will hide it. Still leaves you 80 Gigs free. If the image is a lot smaller than 40 Gigs then just reduce the size of the partition to suite.

The old drive will make a nice little USB drive in an external case. But I guess you planned that anyway.

Best now to destroy the Hiren's CD. Its legality is somewhat grey. But since you are only using it for a quickie move of drives I can't see anyone breaking your door down.
