To Help Prevent Pollution of Lead Acid Battery
When people talk about lead acid battery, they will think of car battery which is close to our life. You might not know the principle of lead acid battery. It stores electricity energy through a reversible chemical reaction. It can be utilized with a permutation of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to change electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back. Scientifically it is considered that lead acid batteries are harmful for our health as it may create burns and other permanent damage if we come in close contact with it due to the use of diluted sulphuric acid electrolyte. Sulfuric acid is so corrosive that it is seriously damaging to the human skin. Hence, it is high advisable to protect ourselves properly while using this electrolyte. And so, any materials leak during production or unattended disposal could result both environmental problems as well as health hazards.
What should we do as we know its disadvantages? How do we help prevent pollution of lead acid battery? These are just some ideas of me to help prevent pollution of batteries as following:
1. Service batteries regularly and change them only when necessary.
2. Encourage customers to use longer-lasting batteries.
3. Recycle used lead-acid batteries. Batteries not recycled must be disposed as hazardous waste.
4. Store and secure all batteries in a manner that prevents leakage of acid or hydrogen gas to the environment. Indoor storage on an acid-resistant rack or tub is recommended. If stored outdoors, batteries should be kept on an impermeable surface such as a concrete slab that has secondary containment, and the storage area should be under cover to prevent acid run-off.
5. Do not stack batteries as they may fall and crack.
6. Inspect batteries weekly to ensure there are no leaks or cracks.
7. Keep a neutralizing agent such as baking soda near by in case of an acid spill.
Check and maintain the lead acid battery on a regular basis, and then the battery can be used for longer time. Therefore, you will use less battery and less pollution will be found. Anyway, sooner or later, batteries are always recycled to reuse. It can help save natural resources, energy, clean air and water, landfill space, and money. Why do we produce the pollution in the green environment? Just do a little together to prevent the pollution of lead acid battery.

About the Author
Hi, this is lissa, and I am try to tell something about leoch battery, such as automotive battery, motorcycle battery, golf carts battery, motive power battery, etc, hope you like it. Most of them are lead acid battery. And if you currently have some suggestions or advices, I am really appreciate if you tell me.
How do I manually make a lead-acid battery cell using school lab equipment?
These include aqueous sulfuric acid, lead sheet and lead dioxide powder. How can i create a simple conducting cell just to test voltage?
The sulfuric acid should be pretty concentrated. Auto batteries use about 35% H2SO4 by mass so that the ionization of the acid does not go to completion. You need HSO4 1+ ions for an effective cell.
You should probably do this experiment in a sturdy glass container. Pb sheet will be the anode, and PbO2 will be the cathode. If your PbO2 is loose powder, you will need to contain it somehow. I suggest packing the power stiffly in a test tube around a graphite core (you can obtain the graphite from thick pencil refills or an old lantern battery).
Now that you have an anode and a cathode, you can assemble the cell. Add your concentrated acid to the glass container (keep it well below the edge of the container). Attach conducting wire (copper wire is good, if you have it) to a piece of lead sheet, and sink into the solution. Be careful not to let the wire touch the solution! Attach another wire to the graphite sticking out of your test tube. Lower the test tube into solution until the Pb02/graphite is soaked, being careful not to let the wire touch the solution or to let the tube tip over. Now, connect each end of the wire to a voltmeter. There's your voltage. If you don't get a reading, try switching the wires.
Notes of caution:
- If you see bubbles, it is probably hydrogen gas. Take care to ventilate your experiment to prevent an explosive build-up.
- The acid is very corrosive. Be careful in handling and use eye protection before you even enter the lab.
- Lead is toxic. Don't lick your fingers. Also do the world a favor and find some safe way to dispose of the PbSO4 lead solution you are generating. Dissolved lead is far more toxic than the solid metal.
