Myth Busters - Network Equipment Market Secrets De-Mystified!
In my time in this business, I've learned that not all I.T. managers and purchasing agents are up to par with some equipment on the secondary market. I've compiled the most popular myths that I've heard over the years and decided to get the truth out once and for all. It made me think of my son's favorite show - MythBusters - so it's also a little tribute to him. Here we go.
MYTH 1: The Secondary Market = The Black Market
In reality, the two markets aren't even related. In fact, most reputable sellers of pre-owned equipment have VERY stringent practices in place to detect black market or counterfeit goods in order to protect the customer along with themselves. Also, the old proverb that you can't judge a book by it's cover rings true here as well. Product packaging is not a reliable way to judge authenticity, which is why the most dependable resellers conduct extensive tests on all equipment resold to prove legitimacy and functionality. MYTH BUSTED!
MYTH 2: Used Equipment is Abused Equipment
Reputable resellers of pre-owned equipment do not sell their goods "as is." All equipment has been fully refurbished to ensure they are as close to original condition and tested to ensure they are in complete working condition as well. MYTH BUSTED!
MYTH 3: The Equipment You Need is only Available New
Due to the economy, store closings, bankruptcy and asset disposition; more pre-owned equipment is available than ever before. Top resellers maintain extensive inventories of the most popular networking equipment in inventory and ready to ship. This means the vast majority of requests can be filled on the spot. If not, most resellers have extensive contacts, enabling them to fulfill requests within days. MYTH BUSTED!
MYTH 4: Third-Party Components = Inferior Products
A third-party component is not necessarily an inferior replacement. For example, Cisco buys its memory from NEC, Samsung and other "third parties" rather than manufacture those products. The memory does not carry a Cisco logo, even when they resell it, so identical items are available directly from the memory manufacturer. Purchasing accessories like memory directly from the "third party" source may reduce costs as much as 80 percent. A knowledgeable secondary market provider helps identify these savings opportunities while ensuring all "third party" components are, in fact, high quality equipment. MYTH BUSTED!
MYTH 5: Used Equipment Comes With No Warranty
Most reputable resellers will have some sort of warranty for replacement of any defective products. Many offer as much as a one-year overnight replacement warranty on every equipment purchase which surpasses the warranty offered directly from Cisco on NEW equipment. MYTH BUSTED!
MYTH 6: Technical Support is Not Available
Leading resellers of pre-owned equipment offer both pre- and post-sale technical support from certified technicians. In many cases, these experts test up to 100 pieces of networking gear each day, giving them more real-world experience than even most OEM technical support specialists. MYTH BUSTED!
