how much power does a Verto Geforce 9400GT 1024mb PCIe Graphics Card need?

i just bought the graphics card, and as the employee at the computer section over at best buy told me,"you need at least 400 or 450w of power to support the graphics card"; is he right? Also, I checked my computer, and it only distributes 300w, what kind of power supply would i need to buy?

You'll be fine with 300 watts. Keep 2 things in mind:

1) The people at Best Buy are often clueless.

2) Video card manufacturer's printed power supply requirements are USUALLY overstated by a fair margin. They have no idea what type of computer a customer will have, so they publish numbers which allow for the worst cases (overclocking, multiple hard drives and optical drives, extra fans, lots of components drawing more power than your average build) The published numbers are what someone in that situation would need. The average joe with a stock CPU, single CD drive and one hard drive wouldn't need anywhere near that much.

ATI's official recommendation for the Radeon 4650 is 400W, but that card runs fine in systems with 300W power supplies. Since the company doesn't want fringe customers with bleeding edge setups claiming their system meets the requirements and the card didn't work as advertised, they inflate the requirement numbers to cover themselves.

You bought a graphics card from Best Buy? Yikes- I hope you didn't pay more than $45 for the 9400GT because for $55 you can get cards twice as good, like the 9500GT and Radeon 4650!
