How do I make what I type appear on screen on my Mac?

I am trying to create a video tutorial and need it to show what I am typing on the screen. I don't want there to be a big keyboard on the screen, I simply want the characters to appear on screen.

I have seen videos with this, basically what happens is, someone types in a shortcut, and it will stay on screen until the next shortcut is typed. The characters appear in a small dark box on the screen in white letters, please let me know if you know what program this is!

I am confused a little by what you are saying but I think what you need is either a screen recording software, such as ScreenFlow, iShowU, Camtasia, etc. A screen recorder would be an application that would make a video of your screen by recording it. The other thing you could be thinking of is just iMovie titles, and then you just select how long to have the title up. Hope this helped!
