The 512 Mb SDRAM can be considered as a high speed COMS , dynamic random-access memory that contains 536.870.912 bits. It has a synchronous interface with all the signals registered on the positive edge of the clock signal, CLK. It is internally configured as a quad-bank DRAM. Each of the x4's 134,217,728-bit banks is organized as 8,192 rows by 4,096 columns by 4 bits. Each of the x8's 134,217,728-bit banks is organized as 8,192 rows by 2,048 columns by 8 bits. For the SDRAM the Read and Write accesses are burst oriented. The accesses begin at a location that has been selected and continue in a programmed sequence for a wide range of programmed locations. With the registering of an ACTIVE command the accesses begin to take place. This is then followed by a READ or WRITE command. The address bits registered coincident with the ACTIVE command are used to select the bank and row to be accessed (BA0, BA1 select the bank; A0–A12 select the row). The address bits registered coincident with the READ Or WRITE commands are used to select the starting column location for the burst access. The SDRAM provides for programmable READ or WRITE burst lengths (BL) of 1, 2, 4, or 8 Locations, or the full page, along with a burst terminate option. At the end of the burst sequence an auto recharge function gets enabled to provide a self-timed row precharge.
The 512Mb SDRAM makes use of internal pipelines architecture in order to result in high speed operation. This architecture is considered compatible with the 2n rule of prefetch architecture. It also a high speed fully random access to be achieved by changing the column address on every clock cycle. Precharging one bank while accessing one of the other three banks will hide the RECHARGE cycles and result in seamless, high-speed, random-access operation.
The 512Mb SDRAM has been so designed to operate at 3.3V. It has an auto refresh mode along with a along with a power-saving, power-down mode. All inputs and outputs are LVTTL compatible.
SDRAMs offer magnificent advances in the operating performance of DRAM. This includes the capability to burst data synchronously at a high data rate along with an automatic column address generation, the ability to interleave between internal banks in order to hide precharge time, and in time of a burst access to randomly change column addresses on each clock cycle.
