The terms DTE and DCE are relative with respect to what part of a network you are observing. RS-232C is the recommended standard (RS) describing the physical interface and protocol for relatively low-speed, serial data communication between computers and related devices.

The EIA originally defined RS-232C for teletypewriter devices. The DTE is the RS-232C interface that a computer uses to exchange data with a modem or other serial device. The DCE is the RS-232C interface that a modem or other serial device uses in exchanging data with the computer.
For instance, your PC typically uses an RS-232C interface to communicate and exchange data with connected serial devices such as a modem. Your PC also has a Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) chip on the motherboard. Since the data in your PC flows along parallel circuits, the UART chip converts the groups of bits in parallel to a serial stream of bits. To work faster, a UART chip has buffers so it can cache data coming from the system bus while it processes data going out the serial port. why do we have so many different ports / why cant we have PC's with just USB/ serial ports etc only?
Do the different ports serve different purposes? we can connect the printer through LPT1/ usb too ..so what difference does that make? what makes one port different than the other? In short why the different ports? can we have simpler lives?
If you invented a pair of scissors that could only be used by a person with three hands, you would greatly reduce your sales. So when you create something to make money, you want the largest market possible. Years ago all printers had either SCSI or Parallel conectors, USB and FIrewire were unheard of. So when these technologies came out, there were still people using the old printers and game controllers. Manufacturers realised that the main obstacle to upgradig is cost. If people think "I want that but then I would have to get a new printer, which means new ink, and I would have to get a new controller too" It then becomes too expensive to upgrade. (This is why early PS3s were backward compatible and new ones are not)
So the different ports do different things. The parallel port is still present on most PCs and can be used for printing but has other uses with things like robots and other devices that can use the patallel port (I think some remote control airplane training software still use this port for connecting a mock controller to)
As for a simple life, most ports are colour coded and you can only put the plug in one way very much like the toy you give to a one year old with the different coloured shapes that fit into the diferent coloured holes of the same shape. How simple did you want it to be?
Yes it would be nice if everything was wireless, but sometimes it is nice to be able to plug a cable in and have it just work than to be pulling your hair out because for no apparent reason, your WPA encryption is not compatible with one computer on your network.
