Functions of the CPU cooling fan
When use any machines for a long time, heat will be generated, just like that computer is also a machine in which heat is generated from various parts. To cool down the machine and to protect against the heat, CPU cooling fans are used. One of the main cooling parts in the CPU is cooling fans. If the heat generated is not released or not cool downed immediately it can cause severe damage to other parts of the computer. Although computers are made in a fashion that generation of heat can be kept controlled but a special cooling system is always desirable.
The most important functions of the CPU cooling fans are that it flushes out the heat and draws cool air in the system. Cooling fans are also fixed in mother boards and hard drives. There are more than two to three fans are attached in the central processing unit. The olden days computers did not have any type of ventilation but only an aluminium sink along with couple of fans were fixed. However this is not sufficient with magnitude computer today. Operating Laptops also generates a lot of heat, although all the laptops are also well fixed with a proper cooling system. Overheating can cause severe damage to the laptop or its parts and some time even stop functioning totally. Hence all the Laptops are attached with laptop coolers that do the same function as the CPU cooling fan.
Today computers are used for more than 10 to 15 hours a day only an aluminium sink will not be enough for the ventilation. Cooling fans were introduced and proved to be very efficient and economical for using the computers for a longer period of time. The major purpose of having a CPU fans is to keep the Central Processing Unit cool. But there could be some obstacle in smooth running of the CPU cooling fan like dust. When dust settles down on the blades of these fans it reduces the smooth functioning of the fan. Therefore regular maintenance is essential to keep the CPU cooling fans in good running condition. Heat Transfers or Poor flow of heat could also be an obstacle in reducing its efficiency.
Most of the people won’t realize the important of a computer cooling system even today. Ignorance and lack of knowledge about its components could be one of the main factors. Therefore it is vital as a computer literate to know the various peripherals of the machine and their functions. This not only helps in maintaining them but also avoiding any damage to the part. There are chances that you may lose a vital part due to overheating and that may cost you very high for replacing it with a brand new one. Computer has started making odd electrical-shorting type noise from the back of the CPU what to do?
The computer is 5 years old, has for a while been running with fairly noisy fan, now it is making these electrical-shorting type noise in addition. Is it likely that these are Clicks of Death? Am I going to lose my hard drive?
the 'click of death' is more of a click noise, you would notice it coming from the area the hard drive is.
you might want to check that the power cable that is going into the PSU is securly fitted. if it's coming from inside the PSU, i'd suggest replaceing it, before it dies or takes out other components.

if your computer is 'silent' or close to silent, it could be a number of things, things that i have noticed that sound like high pitch sqeeling/electrical noises and are completely normal.
RAM, when the RAM is it produces a high pitched sqeeling noise. usually drowned out by the fans or other components like the hard drive.
PSU, sometimes if the computer is quiet enough, you will hear the capacitors clicking on/off when the power consumtion rises/lowers.
there are other components on the Motherboard that also produce high pitched noises when used, they are normal, and usually you dont hear them because they are drowned out by fans.
