Hitachi's New Nehalem-Based Blade Symphony Servers
Hitachi has unveiled updates to a pair of blade servers which it promises will help companies meet carbon reduction targets.The BladeSymphony 2000 and BladeSymphony 320 are built on Intel's Xeon 5500 Series Nehalem processor, which is specifically designed to offer a very high performance per watt.The new systems, part of the company's BladeSymphony server series, are designed to take advantage of the latest Intel Xeon 5500 Series processors, which have been created using the chip maker's latest CPU architecture, codenamed

The head of business development at Hitachi's European Systems Solutions division, Ravi Ahluwalia said Chief information officers are under increasing pressure to slash carbon emissions and overall IT costs.The BladeSymphony 2000 and 320 servers enable businesses to meet these needs by cutting the power use of their datacentre, whilst taking advantage of the latest processing capabilities to run business-critical applications at the highest performance level.
The BladeSymphony 2000 now boasts 144GB of memory, and the server's bandwidth has been increased to help ensure that virtualised environments have the necessary resources. X3470 vs 2xE5405? (Xeon CPU's)?
Which would be better to run in a server environment?
The first has has hyper threading, which enables it to to process 8 threads, but two physical cores are always better to have. However, is the difference worth another $100? With that amount of money I could get another 8GB's of ram (Per month), bringing it up to 16, instead of 8.
Ideas?
P.S. Don't tell me to Co-lo or anything like that, living in Australia, the data costs almost as much as having one of the providers machines running in there, if not more + the bonus of support.
Based on benchmark numbers, a single x3470 (2.93GHz, 4core w/ HT) is almost identical in performance to a pair of E5405's (2.0 GHz, 4core each no HT). http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=%5BDual+CPU%5D+Intel+Xeon+E5405+%40+2.00GHz
Without knowing the details of what you're doing on that server, I'd opt for the cheaper solution. In many cases, servers are far more limited by data access than processor power, so there may not be any noticeable performance difference between the two.
Those Xeons use different sockets (LGA1156/LGA771), but neither uses the most powerful current socket. If one did support a more powerful socket, I might make a different recommendation considering future upgrade potential.
